When employees have a sense of purpose at work, they are more engaged, motivated and productive. When all of these elements are in place, it establishes a positive workplace environment, paves the way for collaboration and helps the team to achieve the company’s goals. This has a direct impact on whether the company meets its bottom line, or exceeds it.
While a company cannot make an employee feel purpose at work, it can develop an atmosphere that encourages a mindset of purpose. Here are four steps to start.
Tips To Help Employees Find a Sense of Purpose at Work
1. Craft A Purpose-Driven Mission Statement
The first place to start is by examining your mission statement. It needs to define two things: the company’s mission and its purpose. When a mission statement is articulated clearly with a ‘what’ (the mission) and a ‘why’ (the purpose), it builds a path for employees to connect with their job in a more meaningful way. The core values expressed set the tone for interactions with employees and clients.
Once a purpose is clarified and built into the mission statement, communicate this with employees; then, open a dialogue that takes it one step further. Open the floor to questions about how the company plans to implement this purpose and how the work employees do each day will help them to accomplish this goal. Don’t leave this as a one-sided conversation; ask employees to share how the company’s mission and purpose resonates with them and ways it will positively affect both the work environment and relationships with customers.
2. Help Develop Professional Strengths
When employees are encouraged to utilize their unique abilities and talents in the workplace, it gives meaning to the small and big tasks, helping them find purpose at work. Many employees will know where their professional strengths lie, but others will not. However, management is in the perfect position to observe an employee over a period of time and discover where their strengths lie.
Once their talents become clear, make time to share your thoughts with each team member and let them know where you see them excelling. During this conversation, ask them what activities make them happier, what skills they’d like to use more in their job and if there are ways the company can help them improve upon existing professional strengths.
Their answers will be a guide on ways to nurture those skills. For each employee, it will be a different scenario. One team member might ask to analyze more data, another might want to take on a leadership role and another might request a career development class.
3. Encourage Authenticity At Work
When an individual can be authentic at work and valued for their unique characteristics and skills, it creates a confident employee who is positive and more satisfied with their job. It also reduces stress, burnout and sets the stage for collaboration and innovation.
Leadership needs to be the driving force behind encouraging authenticity at work. This includes managers and team leaders who are open and honest as well as actively engaging with staff, asking questions, listening to feedback, and taking the time to understand the uniqueness of each employee and how the company can create a more authentic workplace.
4. Foster Purpose Through Community
When we are part of a community or group, we feel more connected to ourselves and our lives. Busy schedules and obligations outside of the workplace can keep employees from volunteering their time and skills, but that doesn’t have to be the case.
Companies can encourage employees to start groups with their colleges, such as a running group, book club or mentorship program. Companies can also choose to partner with a nonprofit organization and set aside time each month for employees to get involved, volunteering while on the job. Participating in a non-related work activity gives employees a chance to know each other outside of work and create a pathway for a more purposeful work day.
