How To Be Authentic At Work And Why It's Important
Our backgrounds, experiences, failures and successes all create who we are as individuals and define the skills and knowledge we bring to the workplace. However, bringing your authentic self into the office and purposefully putting yourself in situations where you might be judged by your coworkers and employer is not easy. It takes courage to take risks, speak up and show vulnerability!
To help you know how to be authentic at work, I’m sharing some benefits, insights and tips.
Why Being Authentic At Work Is Important
Think about a job you had that didn’t value authenticity. Did you dread going to work every day? Were you productive? Did talking with your coworkers or supervisors cause anxiety? At the end of the workday, did you find yourself mentally and emotionally drained? When being authentic at work isn’t valued, it creates a forced separation of self, which is emotionally taxing and leads to disengagement at work and at home.
Research has shown that authenticity and happiness go hand-in-hand, and when you bring your whole self to the workplace it:
Being more authentic in the workplace creates a safe place to share experiences, which builds confidence and leads to more creative thinking. It also makes you more productive, as well as perceptive, and leads you in the right direction for a more meaningful and fulfilling career. For employers, it also has the added benefit of having a team that is more engaged, productive and innovative.
How to Be Authentic at Work
One of the first steps to becoming more authentic at work is to understand what is stopping you. This answer will be different for everyone, but begin by asking these 3 questions:
In what situations do you feel you cannot be yourself?
What prevents you from being open to sharing your thoughts and speaking up?
If you decided to reveal more about who you are, what would happen?
Take the time to answer these questions thoughtfully and don’t rush the process. Once you understand the answers, you’ll be better equipped to take the necessary steps to know how to be authentic and reveal your true self at work.
Take Those First Brave Steps
Each of us has different vulnerabilities, and sharing who we are is not going to happen all at once or overnight. It takes commitment and courage to practice being more honest with coworkers when talking individually or in a team setting, and during discussions with your superiors.
To start, make it a goal to speak more honestly and openly with one person each day, and over time, it will become easier. As you travel this path, remember we are all imperfect, and if you lead with humility, this will empower you to grow more authentically with every situation that arises.
